Our Approach to the Tariffs

As everyone knows, the ongoing Tariff Situation is affecting companies across the entire board game industry. Japanime Games is not immune to these tariffs, and today we wanted to take the time to share our approach to handling these tariffs, direct from the mouth of our President, Eric Price. - To our Japanime Games Fans - I have been in China for the last several weeks, visiting with many factories to learn more about their processes, sustainability efforts, and how they are handling the tariffs. I decided to make this trip a few months ago because of the fact that I was working with a few new factories for Japanime Games projects, and I wanted hands on experience to discuss projects in process. As many of you are aware, tariffs on Chinese made goods went up across the board by 10% on February 4th. When this happened, I thought, well, we can absorb that. This is frustrating, but we can absorb those costs. Then, on March 4th, it went up to a staggering 20% tariff across the board. This... not so easy. At this point, I was actively considering what we can do to reduce costs and implement changes to compensate for these additional taxes being imposed on American businesses. This is very pressing topic for all in the game industry, but I realize that not all Americans understand tariffs, and what the implications are here. The Trump administration has, in essence, enacted massive taxes onto businesses that source any goods from outside of the United States. This has been propagandized as “taxing China”, but the real truth is that this is taxing Americans. Instituting these massive tariffs on American businesses has not been done with any kind of structure or roll out. 50 years ago, about 25% of Americans were employed in manufacturing jobs. Now, that number is only 10%. We, as a nation, have relied on overseas manufacturing more and more, throughout my lifetime, and for good or for bad, this attempt at an instant reversal on policy and manufacturing is very damaging to both our American businesses and our entire economy. I arrived in China in mid-March, and well… things changed even more while I was there. Last week the tariff rate jumped to 54%, and now (on the day that I wrote this, and was flying back home to America!), up to 104%. By the time that I landed back in the states, the tariff rate had gone up to 125% (look what can happen on an 11 hour flight!), and of course… up to 145% the very next day. You know how they jokingly say “Nobody could have guessed this!” when people complain about the tariffs having been enacted, because "Trump is simply doing what he said he would do when he came into office"? Well, truly, nobody did expect this kind of escalation. There were extreme talks of 35% tariffs before he came back into office, which I really thought was an overblown exaggeration. I was expecting 10-20%. ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE PERCENT was not on my bingo card. Real world math: When tariffs are at 145%, this means if our production cost was $100,000 with the factory, that means when we ship the goods to the USA and they arrive at the port, we then must pay an ADDITIONAL $145,000 to the US government so we can have the goods enter the country. So instead of a total $100,000 production cost, it becomes a total of $254,000 cost. This doesn’t include the freight forwarding fees or fulfillment fees. To be very clear, China does not pay these tariff fees. We, the businesses, do. Boardgames have been duty free for a very long time, and there was not any additional fees for when our products entered the country. Now that the Trump administration has decided to place a blanket tariff on all Chinese goods, this is greatly affecting our industry. Can it get worse than 145%? Well, sure, it’s hard to know how far Trump is willing to take this… but it feels to me that it is likely to go back in the other direction, soon enough. This feels like extreme posturing for ‘negotiations’, as it has elevated to such a high level so quickly. I do hope it turns around soon, to a more realistic and manageable collaboration.  In response to these tariffs, we have decided at Japanime that we must raise our prices in the near future to compensate for these huge increases in production expenses. We have not decided as of yet whether this will be in the form of a tariff surcharge, or if we will be raising the retail prices directly, but this will go into effect at the end of April. This gives a little time for our distribution and retail partners to order products before pricing goes up (and also fans of our games and accessories), and it also gives us a chance to see if things bounce back to a more reasonable tariff before we increase prices. If the tariff situation returns to a more manageable situation soon, we will reevaluate the need for price increases.  As always, we appreciate your support. I have no concerns that we will weather this setback, but we do need to be smart about it. We will get through this, and we will keep enjoying anime, and keep enjoying games. Eric Price President, Japanime Games   What Does It Mean to Raise Prices? Raising prices is not something that we want to do. We know that this price increase will affect everyone from the distributors to the retailers to the consumers - but in light of the increase we are being forced to pay to bring new games (and re-prints of old games) to the US we have to do something to make up these costs. However, as we stated above, even though the prices on some of our new releases will be higher than what we advertised, backers will not be charged the difference. These prices will only affect games going forward in retail. These price increases will be as minimal as possible, and if the tariff situation changes between now and when these prices go into effect, we will have time to reverse or change them if needed. We are in no way attempting to take advantage of this situation. We will only raise prices by the minimum amount possible. But what this does mean is that some of our new releases and up-coming products like Black Clover: Star Festival and Oshi Push: The Vtuber Trading Card game will most likely be increasing. As with anyone in the board game industry currently trying to navigate these increased costs of business, we are keeping an eye on the evolving situation. Chasing after Bounties in the Cowboy Bebop Tabletop Game

Howdy there, fellow anime and tabletop gaming enthusiasts! My name is Akiko, and I'm here to talk to you about one of my favorite tabletop games: Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade. As a die-hard fan of the Cowboy Bebop anime series, I was ecstatic when I discovered that a tabletop game based on the show existed. I mean, who wouldn't want to become a bounty hunter in the solar system and chase after dangerous criminals while grooving to some jazzy tunes? Overview of the Cowboy Bebop Tabletop Game Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade is a deck-building game that lets you play as a member of the spaceship Bebop crew, hunting criminals and claiming rewards. The game is action-packed and jazzy, just like the anime series it's based on. The objective of the game is to capture bounties and earn renown points to become the best bounty hunter in space. The game includes planet boards, character boards, a Bebop board, a damage board, a common deck board, plastic miniatures, cardboard standees, fuel cubes, renown tokens, capture tokens, and a Big Shot stand that requires assembly. Chasing Bounties One of the most exciting aspects of Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade is capturing bounties. Governments in space rely on bounty hunters to enforce a semblance of law, and it's up to you to bring these wanted outlaws to justice. Players must manage limited resources and use their cards strategically to capture their targets. The game involves laying one's reputation on the line for a final, juicy contract, and players can get help from other players in the game. Be warned, though, Big Shot Vicious is a dangerous opponent who can cause some serious trouble. Comparison with Other Anime Tabletop Games As an anime fan, you might be wondering how Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade compares to other anime tabletop games. Well, I can tell you that this game stands out from the rest. The game captures the essence of the Cowboy Bebop world perfectly, and the deck-building mechanics make it both challenging and fun to play. The game also includes two promo cards - Ein and The Blob - which are only available when ordering directly from the website. As a tabletop game enthusiast, I can confidently say that Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade is a must-have addition to any collection. Final Thoughts As an anime and tabletop gaming enthusiast, I cannot recommend Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade enough. How To Win at Tanto Cuore  Tanto Cuore is a competitive 2-4 player deck-building game that is sure to be a hit at your next gaming night!   As a player, you act as the Lord of a Mansion and hire different maids to fill your house, trying to become the best Master of the House. The goal of the game is simple: acquire more Victory Points than your competitors.  So how do you do it?  Avoid Cluttering Your Deck  Tanto Cuore follows the tried-and-true method of many deck-building games: using the cards in your hand to buy better and better cards. Eventually, you’ll be able to buy cards that will actually earn you points. In this game, the cards you’re buying are maids and the resource you’re using to buy them is called Love.  Throughout the game, you’ll employ a range of maid cards. These cards give you different strategies when you play them together. At every turn, you can hire more unique and gifted maids, and use their powers against your opponents.  However, only certain combinations of maid cards will work effectively — so you’ll need to be mindful of the cards taking up space in your hand. If you keep drawing cards you don’t want, you’ll clutter up your deck. The only way to fix this is by getting the correct combination of cards that work with the ones you currently have. Implement Strategies Effectively As you can probably tell, deck clutter will slow you down — and avoiding it will require a certain degree of strategy. You’ll have to think about what kind of cards you’ll need in order for you to earn as many Victory Points as you can, as quickly as you can. Many beginner players get overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available, so your best bet is to start by finding a card that interests you. From there, you can devise a method that incorporates that card into your strategy — by acquiring cards that work well with it.  Don’t Get Distracted  That said, you’ll need to keep an eye on your competitors as you play — they can use their own cards to give your maids bad habits or make them sick. This will lower your Victory Points and hurt your chances of winning the game.  At the same time, try not to get distracted by other players’ actions or what you think they’re going to do next. This is one of the most common mistakes made by new Tanto Cuore players: they make decisions based on what others might do rather than making choices based on what they themselves need to do to win. How To Win at Heart of Crown  Heart of Crown is another exciting deck-building game designed for 2-4 players. In this game, you take on the role of an influential figure in an empire rife with conflict. Your goal is to claim the throne as quickly as possible to unify the kingdom and bring peace to the realm. There are several steps that go into accomplishing such a feat. You must nominate a princess for the title, garner support from the community, clash with rival candidates for the throne, and use your skills to get your princess her rightful place as ruler of the kingdom. The game goes as follows: each player starts with the same deck of cards. You build your personal deck by adding and playing cards according to your own strategy. The first player to acquire 20 Succession Points wins the game. It’s a lot, we know. So here are some strategies to get you started! Beginner Strategy  Throughout the game, you will use Coins from your Farming Village to buy cards from the market and add others to your discard pile, thereby building a strong deck to support your princess on her path to coronation. There are seven main types of cards you can pull: Action, Attack, Curse, Defense, Princess, Succession, and Territory.   The fastest way to gain 20 succession points is to buy only Cities until you reach 6 coins. From there, stick to buying only the most expensive Succession cards. Once you have 20 Succession Points in your hand, you can start putting them in your domain. By following this strategy, you should win the game in about 17 or 18 turns.  If you’re new to Heart of Crown, this basic strategy is an excellent starting point— it’ll lay the foundation for future gameplay.  Advanced Strategy This strategy is for advanced players who are familiar with how Heart of Crown works. As many experienced game players will know, crafting a strategy begins before the first turn takes place.   You can start by assessing the supply set you’ll be using throughout the game. This will help you figure out which princess you should support, how to support her, and what cards you should aim for to accomplish your goal. That said, it’s important that you stay open and adaptable as you play the game. For instance, one of your competitors might buy the card you want before you have the opportunity to buy it yourself. Or, you may have poor luck on the draw and won’t be able to access specific cards. As such, it’s crucial that you know how to adapt your plan and strategy as the game progresses. If you’re ever in doubt, fall back on the Beginner Strategy to get you through! How To Win at Love Battle! High School  Last but not least is Love Battle! High School. This tabletop game is a dating simulator designed for 2-4 players.  As a player, you act as a matchmaker trying to get the protagonist of the game with your favorite girl. Following the initial game setup, you and your competitors will use a vote token to secretly choose between five female suitors for the protagonist. As the game progresses, the girls gain Love on their Love Tracks, and players earn Victory Points. Whoever has the most Victory Points at the end of the game, wins! Phase One: The Hero Phase  Throughout the game, you will get two phases on each of your turns. During the first phase — the Hero phase — you will move Hiroshi, the protagonist of the game, around the high school. You’ll also have the chance to take action during this phase. The actions you can take include things like drawing girl cards for the next phase and kicking your competitors out of whatever room Hiroshi is in. Phase Two: The Girl Phase The second phase is the girl phase, where you’ll move the girls and play the girl cards you obtained in the Hero Phase. The girl cards all have different effects on the game, such as increasing Love, moving the girls around, and giving Victory Points. There are a few other random effects that add variety to every game. This means that you won’t be able to follow a single strategy to win the game — so you’ll have to be creative with your strategy, without tipping off your competitors. The Domina 2 Anthology is a followup on our successful Domina Anthology campaign in June 2020. The new anthology features three titles produced by Domina Games and published in English by Japanime Games. The series’ is famous for its gorgeous, anime-gothic style art and “Worlds of Mystery” - each game plays differently, but all use cards, tokens, and meeples with players attempting to accomplish a goal, whether it’s buying safe passage off a sinking island in Pralaya or discovering the secrets of a dream world in Miraris. The Domina Anthology 2 Kickstarter campaign focuses on three new games, available together in an elegant slipcase, or sold separately - as well as playmats, card sleeves, and other accessories. Latria3-7 Players. 10-20 Min. Drive off the Troll using the Mistletoe card, or slip away by making use of the Night Watch cards. The player who best protects their Daughters and Riches will earn the most points and win the game. Although originally published by Japanime Games in English in 2020, it has been redesigned for this anthology.

Japanime Games: Rocketeering!

Japanime Games had more success than it possibly could have imagined in 2020. With such a successful year, Eric Price has decided to follow in the air-walk footsteps of other famous billionaires such as Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Guy Fieri...and start a new Rocketship company! We are exceptionally proud to announce our newest division of the company: JAPANIME ROCKETERING! Our Motto is: “It’s actually rocket science? We’ve seen enough Space Anime.” Eric has always been a lover of rockets and space. Sporting a collection of many different rockets, Eric has always been most fond of the Tintin rocket and went about Japanime Rocketeering’s first tasks was to emulate this exact design and get it to space. Newly promoted Warehouse crew Brad and Chris, now Chief Rocket Engineers, set out work in secret many months ago to finalize this project. Their efforts to keep this project secret, thankfully, were not in vain. As the company has grown, it only made sense that all existing employees received similar promotions. While there was heavy debate on what the first rocket ship might look like, please enjoy our highly accurate, hi-res imagery from the launch site. As we worked in secret, such images were hard to take unhindered for fear of exposing our progress before we were ready. As the company has grown and needed new positions filled, current positions have changed. We are pleased to announce that Heather, our wonderful and amazing Chief Operations Manager,  will be receiving a promotion to Head of Mission Control. “Honestly, it was about time for that and us going to the moon. All that was going on in my house was ‘to the moon’ this, and ‘gamestonk’ that. One thing led to another and we’re going to the moon. How else do we do Tanto in Space justice?”Jackson Wood, previously our Marketing and Events Coordinator, among other things, wanted to be more adventurous. Last we saw Jackson was this morning on launch day as he climbed into the rocket. He had a wild grin on his face and before he closed the door he said “See ya, Space Cowboys.” before the countdown timer for the rocket launch suddenly began. A solid forty-two minutes later, that rocket was cleared for liftoff and carried its majestic Japanime colored fuselage through the clouds and into the inky blackness of space. “Today is a momentous day for Japanime Games and Japanime Rocketeering” says Eric Price, “I am proud of my team for this moment. Now if you’ll excuse me, it turns out that Jackson accidentally flew the rocket off course... when he tried to drink his chocolate milk after takeoff. I...need to find a new Marketing Manager.”
