Anime Board Games - The Good, The Great, And The Must-Plays

Why We Love Anime Board Games So Much Ask most gaming enthusiasts and they’ll probably tell you that board games are a great way to have fun with your family and friends.  You get to sit together at the table, hovering over the board or shielding your deck of cards from prying eyes as you plot your next move, laughing all the while. You team up to fight your foes and erupt into cheer to celebrate your victories.  Anime board games take this experience to a new level. Not only do they bring you the best features of board game play; they also plunge you into the fantasy world of anime and manga, letting you bring your favorite characters to life — or create your own for your next adventure.  Whether you want to explore the magic of anime and challenge your gaming skills, or you just want to find an exciting game for your next game night, there’s an anime board game out there for everyone.  So keep reading to find the next one to add to your collection! The “Good” Anime Board Games of 2022  Attack On Titan: The Last Stand If you’re a fan of anime, you’ll most likely recognize this title.  This anime tabletop game lets you play as your favorite character from the hit anime series, Attack on Titan. Take on the role of a Scout — either Eren, Hange, Conny, or Levi — and protect the city of Trost from the Titans’ destruction. Or, if you’re feeling like causing some damage yourself, you can play as the Titan! The Titan and castle walls form a vertical playing surface, so you must position your Scout tactfully to succeed in this game. Players strategically move their characters up and down to avoid attacks and inflict damaging blows to weaken the Titan and bring it to its knees once and for all. If you’re a fan of strategic gameplay, you’ll love what Attack on Titan: The Last Stand brings to the table. With multiple tactical options and combinations available in this game, players won’t have to worry about boredom. Additionally, one of the main elements that makes this game so much fun is its fast pace. You have to be strategic and simultaneously think quickly on your feet to avoid the Titan’s attacks — so there’s rarely any time to hesitate!  Sailor Moon Crystal: Imposterous Fans of Sailor Moon will be over the moon for this board game. Based off of the popular anime series, Sailor Moon Crystal: Imposterous lets players venture into the world of the Sailor Guardians and use their powers to defeat evil forces. This time, you’re up against the Deathbusters, who have captured someone from the Guardians team and replaced them with a Daimon imposter. Thankfully, Artemis and Luna uncovered this evil ploy — and now you and your team must work together to identify the imposter in the group.  Throughout the game, players take turns asking a series of open-ended questions and comparing their answers in search of ones that don’t align with the rest of the group. Following every question, each player writes down the answer they think will match the one given by the other players. The more answers a player has in common with the others, the more points they earn. The player with the least amount of points — the one whose answers differ the most — at the end of each round might be the imposter, and their pawn moves down the game board. When a player — or many players — exit the last space on the game board, the team unmasks the imposter and rescues their captured teammate to end the game! The “Great” Anime Board Games of 2022  Tokyo Sidekick Every good Hero needs a Sidekick — and in this game, you get to play as both! Tokyo Sidekick is a 2-4 player game that combines the best elements of deck-building, board movement, and cooperative action. Each player controls one Hero and one Sidekick, equipped with their own unique backstories and abilities. As you move around the board, your teams must fight against powerful villains committing crimes across the city of Tokyo.  Throughout your gameplay, you’ll build your deck and use your cards to power every action and movement to gain the upper hand over your adversaries. Additionally, you’ll discover new gadgets, powers, and stronger abilities that enable you to level up your characters and start working with your fellow Heroes to defeat your opponents. But if you take too much damage, crime reaches dangerous levels, or you can’t beat the final boss, Tokyo will dissolve into chaos and the city will be lost for good.  Heroes must defeat 2 Villains, 2 Supervillains, and the Final Boss — The Menace — to win the game and save the city in time.  Do you have what it takes?  Pick up Tokyo Sidekick today to find out! BESM 4th Edition  Hardcore anime fans and role-playing enthusiasts won’t want to miss out on the 4th edition of Big Eyes, Small Mouth. This revolutionary and action-packed roleplay game is set in the vast world of manga and anime. As a player, you get to create your very own anime character, delve into the depths of dungeons, tame monstrous creatures, and travel to new realms — all with the unlimited power of your own imagination.  One of the features we love most about RPGs is the freedom they bring to gameplay. But we recognize that this can feel overwhelming if you’re just getting started. Thankfully, this volume is a complete and robust system that consists of everything you need to get started — so you can jump right into the world of anime and BESM right away. BESM is just the start of your next fantasy adventure — and the enthralling elements found in anime and manga will bring your journey to life. The “Must Play” Anime Board Games of 2022  Kamigami Battles: Rise of The Old Ones Kamigami Battles: Rise of the Old Ones is a fantastic deck-building game designed for 2-6 players. As a player, you take on the role of one of the Great Old Ones and recruit Disciples and Warriors to fight alongside you in your battles  against the gods trying to conquer your domain. This game has two modes you can play in: Team Match and Free-For-All. In Team Match, players partner up with each other to beat their opponents in battle. In Free-For-All mode, all bets are off — everyone fights each other at once! Whichever mode you choose to play in, your objective remains the same: destroy all of the opposing gods by reducing them to zero energy, or by being the first player to attain 25 energy. This is no easy feat, however. To achieve your goal, you must draw cards from your deck to boost your stats, or attack an enemy god directly. You also have Powers at your disposal. These special abilities give you an edge over other players during battle. Finally, you have Domain Cards, which grant you access to additional abilities based on the various domains they control. The versatility of Rise of the Old Ones paired with its compatibility with other games in the Kamigami Battles franchise make it a must-play for anime and board game enthusiasts alike. And if you want to expand your options within the base game itself, you can pick up some expansion packs to take your gameplay to a new level! Tanto Cuore The final game on our list is Tanto Cuore — another competitive deck-building game that you need to check out.  In this game, you play as the Lord of a mansion and hire maids to serve you as you fill your house (card deck), trying to become the most powerful Master of the House.  Your objective is to acquire the most Victory Points by acquiring and employing different maid cards. When combined, certain cards give you different strategies that you can use in your gameplay. At every turn, you have the chance to hire more unique and powerful maids, and use their skills to your advantage.  But keep an eye on your opponents — they can make your maids sick or give them bad habits, which will lower your Victory Points and hurt your chances of winning the game.  When the game reaches its end, the player with the most Victory Points is deemed the ‘perfect master’ and wins the game! Closing Considerations Anime board games combine the best features of anime and traditional board game play. You get the strategy and fun of friendly competition with the compelling and creative elements of anime, all wrapped into one.  Regardless of your skill level or anime expertise, there’s an anime board game out there for everyone to enjoy. So if you’re a gaming enthusiast looking for a game that gives you the best of both worlds, then you can’t go wrong with any of the games featured on this list! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Japanime Games Brings Japan To You For over a decade Japanime Games has been dedicated to bringing you the finest games from Japan and beyond! Certain card combinations grant you different strategies you can use throughout your gameplay. How To Win At The Best Anime Board Games

How To Win At The Best Anime Board Games

The Best Anime Board Games Are Made For Fun — And Strategy  There are two elements that make an excellent board game: fun and strategy. Anime board games have both of these elements in spades, making them some of the best multiplayer games available on the market today. Those looking for a fun way to spend time with family and friends will find no shortage of anime-themed options to choose from.  If you want something truly unique, keep reading to see our top three anime board games — and how you can win against your competition! How To Win at Tanto Cuore  Tanto Cuore is a competitive 2-4 player deck-building game that is sure to be a hit at your next gaming night!   As a player, you act as the Lord of a Mansion and hire different maids to fill your house, trying to become the best Master of the House. The goal of the game is simple: acquire more Victory Points than your competitors.  So how do you do it?  Avoid Cluttering Your Deck  Tanto Cuore follows the tried-and-true method of many deck-building games: using the cards in your hand to buy better and better cards. Eventually, you’ll be able to buy cards that will actually earn you points. In this game, the cards you’re buying are maids and the resource you’re using to buy them is called Love.  Throughout the game, you’ll employ a range of maid cards. These cards give you different strategies when you play them together. At every turn, you can hire more unique and gifted maids, and use their powers against your opponents.  However, only certain combinations of maid cards will work effectively — so you’ll need to be mindful of the cards taking up space in your hand. If you keep drawing cards you don’t want, you’ll clutter up your deck. The only way to fix this is by getting the correct combination of cards that work with the ones you currently have. Implement Strategies Effectively As you can probably tell, deck clutter will slow you down — and avoiding it will require a certain degree of strategy. You’ll have to think about what kind of cards you’ll need in order for you to earn as many Victory Points as you can, as quickly as you can. Many beginner players get overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available, so your best bet is to start by finding a card that interests you. From there, you can devise a method that incorporates that card into your strategy — by acquiring cards that work well with it.  Don’t Get Distracted  That said, you’ll need to keep an eye on your competitors as you play — they can use their own cards to give your maids bad habits or make them sick. This will lower your Victory Points and hurt your chances of winning the game.  At the same time, try not to get distracted by other players’ actions or what you think they’re going to do next. This is one of the most common mistakes made by new Tanto Cuore players: they make decisions based on what others might do rather than making choices based on what they themselves need to do to win. How To Win at Heart of Crown  Heart of Crown is another exciting deck-building game designed for 2-4 players. In this game, you take on the role of an influential figure in an empire rife with conflict. Your goal is to claim the throne as quickly as possible to unify the kingdom and bring peace to the realm. There are several steps that go into accomplishing such a feat. You must nominate a princess for the title, garner support from the community, clash with rival candidates for the throne, and use your skills to get your princess her rightful place as ruler of the kingdom. The game goes as follows: each player starts with the same deck of cards. You build your personal deck by adding and playing cards according to your own strategy. Throughout the game, players take turns to earn Succession Points. These points represent the support of your subjects and other influential figures in the kingdom. The first player to acquire 20 Succession Points wins the game. It’s a lot, we know. So here are some strategies to get you started! Beginner Strategy  Throughout the game, you will use Coins from your Farming Village to buy cards from the market and add others to your discard pile, thereby building a strong deck to support your princess on her path to coronation. There are seven main types of cards you can pull: Action, Attack, Curse, Defense, Princess, Succession, and Territory.   The fastest way to gain 20 succession points is to buy only Cities until you reach 6 coins. From there, stick to buying only the most expensive Succession cards. Once you have 20 Succession Points in your hand, you can start putting them in your domain. By following this strategy, you should win the game in about 17 or 18 turns.  If you’re new to Heart of Crown, this basic strategy is an excellent starting point— it’ll lay the foundation for future gameplay.  Advanced Strategy This strategy is for advanced players who are familiar with how Heart of Crown works. As many experienced game players will know, crafting a strategy begins before the first turn takes place.   You can start by assessing the supply set you’ll be using throughout the game. This will help you figure out which princess you should support, how to support her, and what cards you should aim for to accomplish your goal. That said, it’s important that you stay open and adaptable as you play the game. For instance, one of your competitors might buy the card you want before you have the opportunity to buy it yourself. Or, you may have poor luck on the draw and won’t be able to access specific cards. As such, it’s crucial that you know how to adapt your plan and strategy as the game progresses. If you’re ever in doubt, fall back on the Beginner Strategy to get you through! How To Win at Love Battle! High School  Last but not least is Love Battle! High School. This tabletop game is a dating simulator designed for 2-4 players.  As a player, you act as a matchmaker trying to get the protagonist of the game with your favorite girl. Following the initial game setup, you and your competitors will use a vote token to secretly choose between five female suitors for the protagonist. As the game progresses, the girls gain Love on their Love Tracks, and players earn Victory Points. Whoever has the most Victory Points at the end of the game, wins! Phase One: The Hero Phase  Throughout the game, you will get two phases on each of your turns. During the first phase — the Hero phase — you will move Hiroshi, the protagonist of the game, around the high school. You’ll also have the chance to take action during this phase. The actions you can take include things like drawing girl cards for the next phase and kicking your competitors out of whatever room Hiroshi is in. Phase Two: The Girl Phase The second phase is the girl phase, where you’ll move the girls and play the girl cards you obtained in the Hero Phase. The girl cards all have different effects on the game, such as increasing Love, moving the girls around, and giving Victory Points. There are a few other random effects that add variety to every game. This means that you won’t be able to follow a single strategy to win the game — so you’ll have to be creative with your strategy, without tipping off your competitors. Time to practice your bluffing skills! Closing Considerations We hope that you’ve enjoyed our list of the best anime board games!  We know there are so many more out there, and we want to help you find them. So if you have any suggestions for other great anime board games for us to try, please let us know.  We’d love to hear from all of our readers about which ones they think are worth playing — and how to beat them, too! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------    Japanime Games Brings Japan To You For over a decade Japanime Games has been dedicated to bringing you the finest games from Japan and beyond! The Best Anime Deck Building Games for Beginners

par Eric Price

The Best Anime Deck Building Games for Beginners

Why Are Deck Building Games So Popular?  Almost every deck-building game follows the same structure: players begin with identical decks of beginner cards and add new ones to their hands as they move along, building their decks around different characters and themes.  While the rules change from one game to the next, the overarching principle remains: build a better deck than your opponents and use it to win the game.  Deck-building games typically entail multiple players competing against each other. They are also great for one-on-one gameplay because they are fast-paced and relatively easy to learn, so confusion is rare, and boredom won't be a problem between turns. Additionally, deck-building games offer the perfect balance of strategy and luck. Players control which cards they purchase to expand their decks, but there is no telling when these cards will circle back to their hand — so a strong strategy is vital. This combination of excitement, versatility, strategy, and chance makes deck-building games a must for any gamer's collection. What We Look For in Anime Deck Building Games  Anime deck-building games are similar to standard deck builders in that they follow the same mechanic but offer a few additional features that set them apart from the rest. Here are a few elements that we look for in an anime deck-building game: Synergy & Adaptability The best deck building games have an element of synergy and adaptability. This means that each card is unique and works well with the others, and every new hand of cards gives you a new way to play the game.  In addition, top-tier deck builder games will give you more playing options than others — for instance, one card may provide you with money while another lets you draw more cards. This way, whenever it’s your turn in a particular game, it feels like anything could happen. An Exciting Twist That brings us to the second feature to look out for: excitement.  The best deck-building games are balanced but never boring. They bring an element of excitement because the gameplay is constantly changing with each turn. Every action has its unique effect on the game and plays off against other players' strategies as well as yours. This makes deck-building games exciting because there's always something new during every round of play. Gaming Accessories  The final feature worth considering is gaming accessories.  Gaming accessories like card sleeves and playmats can be an easy way to elevate your deck-building gameplay experience. Card sleeves protect your cards from wear and tear while you’re playing, which means they’ll last longer than if you were using them without protection. Playmats are another fun way to build out your collection of gaming accessories. Setup playmats feature the deck layout for your main play area and provide a space to place all of your cards in one central location during gameplay, so there’s no confusion about where each card belongs.  While we’d recommend starting with just one or two sets at first, it doesn’t hurt to have more options available if you enjoy more games than you initially expected! Our Shortlist of the Best Deck Building Games  With the perfect balance of adaptability, excitement, and opportunity to elevate your experience, anime deck-building games give good gameplay a whole new meaning. Whether you’re a board game newbie or an experienced player, there is a range of anime-themed deck builders that are worth considering.  So keep reading to explore our favorites!  Heart of Crown Players looking for a game that is as challenging as it is whimsical will love what Heart of Crown brings to the table.  Heart of Crown is a multiplayer deck-building game for 2-4 players. In the game, you take on the role of an influential figure in a kingdom teeming with conflict. Your objective is simple: claim the throne as quickly as possible to unify the empire and return the realm to its former glory. Though simple in theory, accomplishing such a task is no easy feat. You must nominate a princess for the title, clash with competing candidates, garner support from the community, and count on your skills to earn your princess her rightful place as ruler of the kingdom. As a player, you start the game with a deck of cards identical to that of your opponents. You build your deck by incorporating and playing cards according to your unique strategy. Players take turns to gain Succession Points as the game progresses. These points represent the support of your subjects and other influential figures in the kingdom. The first player to obtain 20 Succession Points ascends to the throne and wins the game! Already own the base game? Browse the Heart of Crown collection for game accessories and exciting expansion packs! Kamigami Battles: Rise of the Old Ones The next game on our list is Kamigami Battles: Rise of the Old Ones, an incredible deck-builder for 2-6 players. In the game, you play as one of the Great Old Ones, enlisting Warriors and Disciples to fight alongside you in your battles against the gods who wish to conquer your domain.  You can play the game in two modes: Team Match and Free-For-All. In Team Match mode, you partner up with another player to defeat your opponents in battle. All bets are off in Free-For-All mode — everyone battles each other simultaneously. Regardless of your playing mode, the game's objective remains the same: defeat all opposing gods by reducing them to zero energy or being the first player to obtain 25 energy points. Accomplishing this goal requires drawing cards from your deck to boost your stats or attack enemy gods directly. There are two other factors to help you achieve this goal. First, you can use your Powers, which are unique capabilities that give you an advantage over other players during battle. Second, you have Domain Cards. These cards grant access to more abilities based on the various domains they control. The versatility of Rise of the Old Ones and its compatibility with other games in the Kamigami Battles franchise make it a must-play game on our deck-builder list. Investing in a few expansion packs will give you more options within the base game itself — and elevate your gameplay.  Explore the Kamigami Battles collection today! Tanto Cuore Tanto Cuore is yet another deck-building game worthy of a spot in your coveted collection.  In this 2-4 player game, you act as the Lord of a mansion, hiring maids of diverse skill sets to serve you as you fill your house. Your ultimate goal is to become the mightiest Master of the House in the game.  The game's objective is to acquire the most Victory Points by obtaining and employing various maid cards. When combined, certain maid cards give you different strategies you can use throughout your gameplay. Every turn brings an opportunity to hire more maids and use their skills to your advantage. But do not lose sight of your opponents — they can hurt your maids or give them bad habits, which will lower your Victory Points and hurt your chances of winning the game. Looking to elevate your gameplay? Shop our Tanto Cuore selection for new ways to expand your game collection! Heiki Strike Alternative  On a day like any other, mysterious beings suddenly appeared all over the world, triggering a series of military operations.  Known to the world as Heiki, these mysterious beings are the spirits of weapons that have taken human form — weapons with power beyond human strength. Weapons are made and used by humans, and weapons can only be confronted by other weapons. For some reason, the Heiki follow orders from humans.  In the game, you take on the role of a Commander, building your own force of Heiki to confront your opponent. You can take the aggressive offense and attempt to seize three Battlegrounds, or play defensively and drain your opponent’s resources to secure your victory. Heiki Strike Alternative, a tactical card game for two players, is the first joint project between Japanime Games and Kamikaze Games — one you won’t want to miss out on.  Check out the Heiki Strike Alternative base game here! Closing Considerations The best deck-building games have unique personalities that push the boundaries of the genre. Their excitement, adaptability and versatility bring various strategies to the table and offer countless opportunities for combo attacks, breathing life into the game with every play. Anime deck-building games have all of these features and then some.  Anime deck builders combine the best features of anime and traditional deck-building gameplay.
